Burj Al Arab is situated in Dubai, United Arab of Emirates. The basic design of this structure is far more different from the structures of other hotels. Burj Al Arab is placed on an artificial island which is 280 m i.e. 920 feet out from the Jumeirah beach. The island is connected to the main ground by the means of curving bridge. If you see the structure of the building it resemble as sail of ship. Burj Al Arab was designed by the architect Tom Wright. He worked in WS Atkins PLC. The design and construction was managed by Canadian engineer Rick Gregory. He also worked in WS Atkins. Initial construction started in the year of 1994. It consists of two wings spread in the form of V and the space between them enclosed to the central are in the building that opens up to sky. The construction of this building is very complex. Engineers initial found it to be too difficult but as time progressed, the problems were overcome one by one. In order to have a secure foundation, they drove 230 forty-meter long concrete piles into the sand. Engineers created a layer of large rocks with honeycomb structure to protect the foundation from erosion. The building contains around 70,000 m3 of concrete and 9,000 tons of steel. The rooms are beautifully decorated. There are total 202 bedroom suites. Prices of rooms vary according to its size. Bathrooms have mosaic tile patterns. The famous restaurant Al Munhata is located 200 m above the Persian Gulf from where you can view the whole Dubai. Another restaurant Al Mahara is famous for its seawater aquarium.
The beach where the Burj Al Arab is located was previously called Chicago Beach. The hotel is located on island which 280m offshore of the beach of the earlier Chicago Beach Hotel. The construction started in 1994 and completed in the year of 1999. Huge amount of money around USD $ 650 million was invested in this project. Fletcher Construction from Nez Zealand was the lead joint venture partner in the initial stages of pre-construction and construction. The hotel was built by South African construction contractor Murray and Roberts and Al Habtoor Engineering. Certainly Burj Al Arab has given a new dimension to Dubai.
